Azuka I. MuMin, Senior Vice President, Engagement & Impact of Center of Science & Industry (COSI)
How long have you been in your current position?
How did you decide to pursue a career in the nonprofit field?
Yes, I've always had an interest in social policy - how decisions were made that impacted everyday life. After gaining considerable experience in federal and state government social programs, I decided to utilize that expertise at a grassroots level through a non-profit organization I developed with a colleague.
What do you see as the barriers, obstacles, and/or challenges? How did you or how do you recommend that these be overcome?
The most frequent barrier is funding to provide needed services to a diverse population. I feel the best way to overcome these challenges is through relationships and strategic partnerships with other organizations and businesses who share a passion for the work and can align their mission with that of your organization.
How do you plan to help the next generations?
Honesty, transparency and explaining the value of serving the community for the betterment of everyone. Collectively, we not only have a responsibility to our children, but also to our children's children and their children. It is so important to be mindful of the decisions we make today because they will impact the future.
Would you encourage the young women in your life to pursue a career in nonprofit? Why or why not?
Yes, I absolutely would! This is rewarding work that makes a difference in our community.
Your best piece of advice for women leaders, now or in the future is:
One of my favorite quotes comes from Amrit Desai and I keep it posted on the white board in my office. " Strength is not in your muscles. Strength is in your calmness and the clarity of your mind. Strength comes from putting the negative aside without reacting. Win in calmness, consciousness, and balance. Win without fighting."
