The workplaces that we partner with are one of the most important components of what we do at Community Shares. These are the people who are inspired by the work that our member nonprofits are doing. Their support of the many nonprofit missions goes a long way in making Central Ohio a better place, and because of that we are extremely excited to create new relationships with them. Capital University is one of the many great workplaces that we have a relationship with and a great example of how we approach our business partnerships.
If you're a Columbus native chances are you already know a lot about Capital University. Located in Bexley, Capital is a private liberal-arts university with undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as a prestigious law school. Capital is the oldest university in Central Ohio and is one of the oldest and largest Lutheran-affiliated universities in North America. Discover why Capital decided to offer our workplace giving campaigns.
What does your business or organization do?
Founded in 1830, Capital University transforms lives through higher education. We are the oldest institution of higher education in Central Ohio and offer undergraduate and graduate programs to approximately 3,600 students a year. We are a comprehensive, independent university grounded in the Lutheran tradition. We prepare students to contribute to the world – through both their professional lives and personal service.
How did you hear about Community Shares?
With so many community connections and commitments already established among Capital employees, alumni and friends, many of us were already familiar with the good done by Community Shares. Our partnership with Community Shares is an extension of our outreach commitment to address the needs of the Central Ohio.
What kind of philanthropic work does your business or organization already do?
Capital University students, alumni, faculty and staff devote countless hours to show they care through activities that make a global impact – whether it's around the corner or around the world. Our students volunteer at soup kitchens, build houses for the homeless, tutor children, clean up parks and organize blood drives. Our faculty and staff lead trips abroad to promote healthcare in Mexico, education in Costa Rica and unity in South Africa. Our alumni volunteer to serve as missionaries, healthcare professionals and educators to help those less fortunate in the United States and around the world. In 2012, Capital partnered with Columbus City Schools, Barack Community Recreation Center, Whole Foods Market and Franklin Park Conservatory to support a community garden and cooking and nutrition program benefitting a local inner city neighborhood.
Why did you decide to offer Community Shares to your employees?
Capital believes in what Community Shares believes in. We believe social responsibility and civic engagement are central to who we are today and who we have been for the last 182 years. Those core values are defining factors of our Lutheran heritage and liberal arts tradition. Our partnership with Community Shares creates an easy and meaningful way for the Capital family to give back to the local community and to play a role in solving persistent issues facing Central Ohio.
How difficult was the entire process?
Community Shares of Mid Ohio makes it very easy to partner with them. The process is already in place and its staff worked with us to create a program specific to the goals of Capital University.
Would you recommend other businesses and organizations offer Community Shares?
Without hesitation! It's a great way to build relationships throughout the community while showcasing the character of your employees.
How large is your business?
Capital University employs approximately 500 faculty and staff and educates approximately 3,600 students in undergraduate and graduate programs at its main campus in Bexley and its Law School in downtown Columbus.

What is your favorite thing about your community?
For Capital students, Columbus presents a world of opportunity – both before and after graduation. As the country's 15th largest city, the state capital, the hub of Ohio government and the headquarters of several Fortune 500 companies, Columbus offers innumerable opportunities for hands-on learning through internships, externships, clinical and classroom teaching experiences. It also is an inviting and energizing city in which to live and work after graduation.
