Empowering Students Through Mentorship: WrightChoice Mentoring's Commitment to Equity and Career Success

It takes a variety of skills to succeed in a career. In order to ensure students are prepared for their career or next job, our new member connects students with career experts for advice and guidance. WrightChoice Mentoring is dedicated to bridging the gap in mentoring equity by fostering transformative relationships that empower students to connect, learn, and flourish. With a focus on building confidence and facilitating access to career pathways, they are committed to creating a supportive environment where students from all backgrounds, including those with disabilities, feel included and valued. By embracing diversity in all its forms, they aim to provide the tools, guidance, and resources necessary for students to succeed, both academically and professionally.

We chatted with WrightChoice Mentoring to learn more about their work, recent achievements, and challenges. Here’s what they shared about their mission, impact, and role within the community:

1. What sets your organization or program apart from others working in a similar space?
WrightChoice Mentoring stands out because of our unwavering commitment to mentoring equity. We focus on fostering transformative relationships that empower students from diverse backgrounds, including those with disabilities, LGBTQ youth, and first-generation college students. By integrating tailored mentoring with financial literacy, career exposure, and holistic development, we address gaps that traditional mentoring programs often overlook.

2. What has been your biggest success as an organization in the past year?
Our biggest success this past year was partnering with Lainie Gabriel to launch the Dreams2Reality Campaign in 2025. D2R empowers students to achieve their aspirations through mentorship and inspiration. Featuring the Dreams2Reality Tour with engaging speakers, a video series highlighting impactful mentor/mentee stories, and resources to foster growth, the campaign connects young people to the tools, guidance, and confidence they need to turn their dreams into reality.

3. What is the most pressing issue your community or clients are currently facing in the coming year?
Many of our students face systemic barriers to equitable opportunities, particularly in education and employment. Bridging the gap between aspiration and access remains a challenge, especially for students with disabilities who often lack representation and tailored support in professional environments.

4. How can people who are inspired by your work get involved with your organization?

We welcome volunteers to become mentors who support students through their first-year college journey or their campus-to-career transition.  We are also seeking financial awareness and well-being mentors – YourMoneyMentors/WellbeingMentors. Becoming a Career Coach is another way to volunteer. Additionally, individuals and organizations can support us by sponsoring events, offering in-kind contributions, or participating in our annual fundraising gala. www.WrightchoiceMentoring com

5. Who are some of your favorite partners or collaborators in the community, and how do you work together?
We value partnerships with Cristo Rey High School, Wright State University, I KNOW I CAN, and Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities. Cristo Rey connects us with driven students. I KNOW I CAN links us to first-generation college students, and Wright State’s Office of Disability Service and Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities supports our mission to recruit and empower students with disabilities, creating meaningful opportunities for our mentees

6. Why did you decide to join Community Shares of Mid Ohio?
Joining Community Shares aligns with our mission to foster equity and inclusion across all aspects of society. Beyond fundraising, we value being part of a network that shares our commitment to justice and creating transformative change for marginalized communities.

7. How does your organization contribute to creating a more just, caring, and healthy community for all?
WrightChoice Mentoring embodies this vision by equipping underrepresented students with the tools, confidence, and networks to succeed. We focus on breaking down systemic barriers, championing diversity, and fostering a sense of belonging that drives long-term success.

8. What’s an interesting fact or statistic about your organization that most people might not know?
This organization's work and impact were highlighted in 2009 on The Montel Williams Show, and a check for $20,000 was received. https://youtu.be/nvYv-k_85ts?si=uN84NnHGmujiIUfE
